Favorite Software
Here are (currently) my favorite software applications.
open source — MacOS
- NeoOffice: it is sluggish, but it is the best ODF office suite on MacOS. I think.
- Shiira: a pretty cool web browser (better than Safari).
- Smultron: best text editor.
- Fink: pretty good package system containing many several good applications such as tetex and gnuplot.
- Skim: excellent PDF viewer.
- Camino: decent browser.
- Seashore: excellent graphics editor (bitmaps).
- Cyberduck: good sftp client.
open source — cross-platform
- Style check: a must if you use LaTeX
- lacheck: another useful LaTeX checker
- Eclipse: decent IDE.
- WebSec: excellent web page monitoring application, for those time when a RSS feed is not available.
free (as in free beer) — MacOS
- PDF to Keynote: can convert any PDF file to keynote format (useful to few people, but very useful to those who need this!)
- Google Notifier: useful desktop tool to monitor Google Mail and Google Calendar.
free (as in free beer) — cross-platform
- Opera: an excellent browser, useful to test your web sites with.
- Skype: best teleconference tool.
- Google Mail: best email client, period.
- Google Calendar: pretty good standard-compliant calendar tool.
- Google Document: pretty good online word processor and spreadsheet software.
commercial — MacOS
- OmniGraffle: best sketching tool.
- Toast 8 Titanium: burn your DVDs without trouble.
I agree with a lot of that list except for Smultron - I prefer TextMate.
One addition too, BibDeskis a great, free reference manager that integrates nicely with Skim (it’s by the same people).
